About Us
How LA EcoExplorers Began
LA EcoExplorers began with a news story about an oil pipeline reopening near Santa Barbara. We started researching what that could mean for marine life, expecting to focus on one issue. Instead, one question kept leading to another. Oil pollution led to marine ecosystems, then to DDT, harmful algal blooms, wildfires, wildlife crossings, urban heat, and other environmental stories across Southern California.
The more we researched, the more we realized how little we had known about environmental problems happening close to home—and how difficult much of the science was for younger students to access. So the project changed. Instead of simply researching these issues, we began turning them into short, interactive stories that make local environmental science easier to explore.
That became LAEcoExplorers.org.
